I know nothing.
Today's media, which is the way the public perceives things, is becoming more and more unified. Huge multinational internet conglomerates (OMG, never would I have thought I would be using such a word especially after ECONOMICS 4!!!) like CNN, BBC or AOL etc, give us the news, tell us what are the best movies, recommend restaurants, and let us communicate globally with great ease. There is no doubt that media and technology has made the world smaller, but in a sense it also sways the public opinion in countless arenas. We learn what they think is important for us to know. At worst, this has lead to people not thinking for themselves, and simply following public opinion. Will different cultures eventually fuse into one? Maybe, I don't know. However, I think as the world gets smaller it has never been more important for different people to maintain and be proud of our differences. (are YOU?) it is our differences that entice us to travel, and keep us curiously studying other cultures. It is these differences that add spice and mystery to our lives. Just take a look at our very own Bukit Bintang. Just a street across, there is such a BIG difference. Both culturally and spending wise; it is both wonderful and at the same time sad. I mean, it's a blessing to be in Malaysia where you ALMOST can get everything at somewhere around, but what I don't get is why are the people of Malaysia not embracing their own personal IDENTITY?? I admit, I love Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Ed Hardy and etc.. but, would you seriously think people from overseas would want to see the SAME THING they can get at their motherland a season AHEAD at our country? Yes, it's definitely cheaper, but... are we sacrificing our culture, identity and lifestyle to adapt(or change) for the supposedly more sophisticated people? Why do we bow down to them when all they see is that we are savages and primitive? I love eating with my hands, does it make me ugly and uncultured? If I eat with the proper cutleries and have actual proper table manners, does it make me any less Whiter? Just a couple of days ago I was on Youtube and I came across this extremely demeaning and downright discriminating video, I was just sadden by the fact that this idiot took his spare time to create such a prejudice video when there are far more intellectual affairs to debate on(even saving a kitten from the tree outside his room is far more stimulating than making the video). I admit and agree that every country has its ugly, ghetto side, but it doesn't mean that the country isn't progressing or makes the country anymore appalling than the other so-called 1st world countries(i.e the US). I acknowledge the fact that China isn't one of the prettiest in the humility and social interaction area, but I don't see they all having a 12 year old bringing a gun to school and massacring other schoolmates in the school. Makes me wonder OUT LOUD which country who's extremely famous for it. Then again, even if there were such an incident, China's censorship board would have covered it up immediately to minimise the damage. GLOBALISATION. Advancement in technology and the in flow and out flow of people would have contributed to all that is going on in the world, which is even more evident in our part of the world as all the supposedly smarter and intellectual people invaded our space and deprived us from our resources and at the same time, robbed our culture and identity. Nevertheless, the most atrocious act was not the video by itself. It was the people who commented on the video. It goes to show how they are ever so comfortable in their own comfort zone that they are like little sheltered bugs who never saw the sun and shrivels up when they meet the great big sun; or like the goats on the side of the bridge, thinking it has the best grass to graze, never knowing the grass MAY be greener on the other side. The video was just a compilation of photos, which may not have been the prettiest photos of China/Taiwan(Chinese as a whole.); but no actual stories behind the footage were given. I strongly believe that there will always be two sides of the same story/picture. However, to further prove that those people are single-minded microorganisms and how evidently ignorant they are, their comments were basically "Down with China!", "Boycott Beijing Olympics!", "The Chinks are just stupid and they only contribute more to the world pollution and nothing else.", "Boycott China made products, after all they all faulty and maybe poisonous." etc etc. Don't they realise that by boycotting the Olympics, it doesn't help their own country? I dare them to boycott ALL China made products, they will most likely have almost nothing to use in the world! China is currently the world's mogul, without them, the world economy will most likely crash, and the world will experience a GLOBAL RECESSION. (shit, econs 6 AGAIN.) Good Luck to them trying to find a substitute. Even India might find it hard to compete and fill in their shoes, but who knows, I may be wrong. Adapt, evolve, meta morph into whatever the situation may be, but do not lose sight of your core. May you be American born, British born, Malaysian born, or even Venezuelan born, you will still be what you are. It is only the citizenship you take on, the identity you conform to, but ultimately, no one can change the essence of who you really are in your core. well, you think about it. It's all in your hands and the decision is yours to make. You might still feel that the other side is greener, or you may think otherwise. You may even think I'm the one that is ignorant and stupid. However, at least I can be comforted by the fact that I know better than to be the frog in the well, not knowing what is going on on the other side of the world. I AM CHINESE, AND NOTHING WILL BE ABLE TO CHANGE IT. for the time being, may peace and love be on all of you. |
THE girl
its me I dreamed a dream in time gone by. When hope was high and life worth living. I dreamed that love would never die. I dreamed that God would be forgiving. Then I was young and unafraid. And dreams were made and used and wasted. There was no ransom to be paid. No song unsung, no wine untasted. byes(:
